A market based approach to inflation expectations, risk premia and real interest rates ¬リニ

چکیده
In this paper we approach the inflation expectations and the real interest rate by using the information contained in the yield curve. We decompose nominal interest rates into real risk-free rates, inflation expectations and risk premia using an affine model that takes as factors the observed inflation rate and the parameters generated in the zero yield curve estimation. Under this approach we could obtain a measure of inflation expectations free of any risk premia. Moreover in our estimation we avoid imposing arbitrary restrictions as is mandatory under other methodologies based on unobserved components. The empirical exercise has been applied to an economy – like the Spanish one during the 90s – with an important convergence process and a change in the monetary policy regime. The results suggest that the evolution of inflation expectations has been smoother than was expected. © 2011 Asociación Española de Finanzas. Published by Elsevier España, S.L. All rights reserved.

New tips from TIPS: Identifying inflation expectations and the risk premia of break-even inflation
This paper decomposes the break-even inflation rates derived from inflation-indexed bonds into inflation risk premia, liquidity risk premia, and inflation expectations. I estimate a common factor model with autoregressive conditionally heteroscedastic (ARCH) errors that extracts co-movements from twentytwo monthly and quarterly indicators to identify these three components. The results indicate...
متن کاملEstimating Inflation Expectations with a Limited Number of Inflation-Indexed Bonds
We develop a novel technique to estimate inflation expectations and inflation risk premia when only a limited number of inflation-indexed bonds are available. The method involves pricing coupon-bearing inflation-indexed bonds directly in terms of an affine term structure model, and avoids the usual requirement of estimating zero-coupon real yield curves. We estimate the model using a non-linear...

This thesis looks at ways of measuring the inflation expectations of economic agents, by constructing a market-based measure from the inflation compensation of government bonds. Inflation compensation is defined as the difference in yields between nominal and index-linked government bonds leaving investors indifferent between holding the two. Inflation compensation is a true measure of expectat...

This study empirically examined the effects of systematic market and common risk factors in explaining the variations in excess returns of securitized and direct real estate using multi-factor asset pricing models (MAP). The homogeneity of risk premia associated with the economic risk factors was also tested to determine whether the two real estate markets were integrated. By constraining the r...

The most relevant practical impediment to an application of the Markowitz portfolio selection approach is the problem of estimating return moments, in particular return expectations. We analyze the consequences of using return estimates implied by analysts’ dividend forecasts under the explicit notion of taxes and non-flat term structures of interest rates and achieve quite good performance res...
